End of an era for Kirkby CC

An announcement today that Kirkby Cycling Club will be disbanded at the end of the year.
The Kirkby Cycling Club had it’s heyday in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, producing many top riders who went on to national and international success. But in recent years membership of the club has declined, and it suffered a double blow with the demolition of it’s home at Kirkby Sports Centre, shortly followed by the death of the club’s President and driving force, Ken Matthews

Club member Carl Lawrenson commented ‘It is sad to lose any cycling club, particularly one with the proud history of the Kirkby. Unfortunately membership had declined to point where it was impractical for it to continue, a reality that even Ken had begun to recognise.  The Eddie Soens Handicap will now be promoted by Merseyside Cycling Development Group (MCDG) and Carl shall be continuing as organiser for 2009.’

The Ribble Valley CRC Fylde road race on Sunday Junior rider Johnny McEvoy and Pete Williams made it into the race winning break which went on the first of the 7lap 82km race. The six man move contained Recycling.co.uk trio Newton, Briggs and Diggle as well as 100% me’s Alex Dowsett. The group set about gaining an advantage over the main field and with 2 laps remaining the attacking started. Tom Diggle was the first to find the speed too much and dropped off the break. With continual attacking from the group, the Kinesis duo rode well to cover the moves and then McEvoy took the initiative with around 1km to go and jumped the group which hesitated just long enough for McEvoy to hold on for the line. Dowsett took the sprint from Newton for 2nd with Pete Williams in 4th.

Landis returns positive B sample
Floyd Landis Landis faces an uncertain future
Floyd Landis is set to lose his Tour de France title and faces a two-year ban after returning a positive B sample for excessive levels of testosterone.
The American's Phonak team dismissed Landis on Saturday when it was confirmed he produced levels more than twice the legal limit after stage 17.
Landis, 30, has said the high levels detected were a "natural occurrence".
Spaniard Oscar Pereiro will be declared the winner of the Tour de France if Landis is stripped of the title.
Pereiro was second overall behind Landis in the race, which finished in Paris on 23 July, and would become the first Spaniard to win the Tour since Miguel Indurain in 1995.

LANDIS
1992: Junior National Mountain Bike champion
1993: US National Mountain Bike champion
1995: Moves to California
1998: Switches to road racing
1999: Joins Mercury pro team
2000: Wins Tour du Poitou-Charentes
2002: Joins US Postal, races in first Tour de France
2003, Jan: Breaks hip in crash
2003, July: Helps Armstrong win fourth Tour de France
2004: Wins Tour d'Algarve
2005: Joins Phonak, finishes ninth in Tour de France
Mar 2006: Wins Paris-Nice
23 July: Wins Tour de France
27 July: Tests positive for testosterone
The official decision to strip Landis of the victory rests with the International Cycling Union (UCI), but Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said: "It goes without saying that for us Floyd Landis is no longer the winner of the 2006 Tour de France."
Landis said in a statement: "I have never taken any banned substance, including testosterone.
"I was the strongest man at the Tour de France, and that is why I am the champion.
"I will fight these charges with the same determination and intensity that I bring to my training and racing.
"It is now my goal to clear my name and restore what I worked so hard to achieve."
His lawyer Howard Jacobs added: "In consultation with some of the leading medical and scientific experts, we will prove that Floyd Landis's victory in the 2006 Tour de France was not aided in any respect by the use of any banned substances."
A Phonak statement said: "Landis will be dismissed without notice for violating the teams internal Code of Ethics.
"Landis will continue to have legal options to contest the findings. However, this will be his personal affair and the Phonak team will no longer be involved in that."

We will explain to the world why this is not a doping case
Floyd Landis speaking last week
The analysis of Landis' B sample took place at France's national laboratory at Chatenay-Malabry in the presence of the American's Spanish lawyer, Jose Maria Buxeda, and experts from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the UCI.

Wiggins on target for Tour

Bradley Wiggins believes he is in the form of his life and remains on target to pick up the Tour de France's prestigious yellow jersey in July.
The 25-year-old is among the favourites to win the Tour prologue on 1 July
He told BBC Sport: "The start to my season couldn't have gone any better.
"The difference between winning the yellow jersey and ending fifth will be seconds but, as it stands, I'm a match for any of the top time triallers."
The Cofidis rider faces major competition in his bid to win the 7km Tour opener in Strasbourg from, among others, countryman David Millar, who will be competing in his first road race since serving his two-year drug ban.
Millar already has past experience of prologue success and donning the yellow jersey, which Wiggins confessed would be useful to learn from.

"Sadly I'll be one of Dave's rivals so I don't think he's going to be giving me loads of advice about how to beat him!" said Wiggins. "That said, we've chatted about the Tour opener.
"It's great for British cycling especially with the Tour starting in London next year. That'll give it all the hype needed - especially if we manage a Brit one-two in Strasbourg.
"It's unprecedented for British cycling and one can only hope it launches a fresh generation of world-class riders coming through the ranks."
While the Olympic champion - he won gold on the track in Athens - admits he is a strong candidate for early Tour glory, he has ruled out being the next Lance Armstrong or competing for overall honours in the race.
But in his Tour preparation so far this season, Wiggins has ridden Paris-Nice and Paris-Roubaix.
In the former - his season opener - he was seventh in the prologue and just five seconds off the pace, while he was comfortably in the top 50 of the notoriously tough Paris-Roubaix.
"I could have gone with the eventual winners at Paris-Roubaix," he added, "but I thought 'what's the point in taking the risk?' when it wasn't one of my season goals. I decided to save myself for the Tour."

Connor `proffitts` from Andy`s stage victory
Stage 5
Ballymena`s Ryan Connor held on to take his second P&O Irish Sea Tour of the North win in Dundonald today, but the final stage was not without its drama, as at one stage Connor had lost the race leaders Yellow Jersey on the tough County Down stage.
A group of around two dozen moved clear on the Sleive Croob climb, where james Dobbin was first over the top, a feat he repeated at Windy gap and Castlewellan to secure overall victory in the AA sponsored competition.
At Clough with 30 miles remaining a group of 7 riders had moved clear, building up a lead of over two minutes, making Peter Williams (Kinesis UK) leader on the road. All the favourites, Connor, Evans and Irvine were behind and gave chase closing the gap in the closing miles.
Three riders clipped off the front in the run in, former British Under 23 Champion Neil Swithenbank, Jonathan Dempsey and 1998 race winner Andy Proffitt.
It was in Connors interests to let the three stay away and take the time bonuses, although he could not afford to give them too much freedom as Dempsey was only 54 seconds down overall.
It all worked to Connors favour, with Proffitt taking the flag at Dundonald ahead of Swithenbank and Dempsey, with stage 4 winner Fraser Duncan leading the chasers in at 21 seconds. Connor, Evans and Irvine were among the chasers, although with Proffitts time bouns it moved him in to equal second overall a mere 10 seconds off race winner Connor, who repeated his 2004 win, albeit with a lesser margin.
All in all the final stage lived up to his expectations, with Connor savouring his second race win before heading back to Europe for the remainder of the season.

Stage 4
Leading in the remains of a 7-man break that had been away for most of the stage, Fraser Duncan (Northern CC) took the honours at Bangor on Sunday afternoon. The breakaway escaped early in the stage, and their lead peaked at 2min 30 seconds at Greyabbey with 20 miles remaining. By the only King of the Hills climb at Newtownards, that lead was down to 1 min 30. In the closing miles the bunch awakened, and on the line were breathing down the necks of the leaders, with Duncan taking the verdict ahead of Terry Dolans Willie Hamilton. Greg Roche was 3rd with former winner Andy Proffitt 4th. Paul Brady (Phoenix CC) led the bunch home 5 seconds behind the winner. The stage result has no real effect on the Overall, with Brendan O`brien dropping out of the top 10.

Stage 2
Just returned from the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Scot James McCallum put his sprinting legs to good use, winning stage two of the P&O irish Sea Tour of the North at Ballymena. He led in a large bunch following the 60 mile stage taking in the Antrim Coast and Glenariff climb.
The first AA King of the Hills climb came after only 13 miles, the 2nd category Shanes Hill. This was taken by Usher-Irish Road Clubs Matt Ward ahead of Tommy Evans (Terry Dolan.com) and Craig Battersby (MK Cycles-LRC) Small groups escaped on the Coast road, never gaining any serious advantage, however an 8 man group had built a 50 second lead at the start of the big climb at Glenariff. Their lead was whittled down and eventually with the splits on the 6 mile climb a group of around 60 gathered at the head of affairs, with Arctic Racings James Dobbin first over the top of the 1st Cat climb, and taking over the lead of the competition. This stayed pretty much intact and it was McCallum who led the field home to Ballymena.
With time bonuses for the first 3, stage runner-up Greg Roche (West Pennine RC) takes over the leaders jersey, whilst overnight leader Webster slips to second, giving up the Yellow Jersey but taking over the Junior leaders White jersey for tomorrows two stages around Bangor. Ards CCs Martyn Irvine maintains his lead in the Under 23 category.

Webster spins to Prologue victory.
One of the youngest riders in the field, 16 yearold first year Junior Sam Webster, riding for the Team Kenesis UK team made his P&O Irish Sea debut in fine style, topping the leaderboard after the one mile opening stage at Stormont.

Tour to start in Whitehall in '07

The world's top cyclists will ride past the capital's main attractions
The 2007 Tour de France will start in London's Whitehall on 7 July, organisers announced on Thursday.
The 8km prologue, the opening day of cycling's most prestigious race, will also pass the Houses of Parliament en route to finishing on The Mall.
London will also host the start of the next stage, a 200km route which passes through the city's financial district before ending in Canterbury, Kent.
It is the first time England has hosted the Tour since 1994.
The Tour has started in an array of different venues, including Dublin and Liege in recent years.
It made its England debut in 1974 in Plymouth before returning to English soil 20 years later just after former Olympic champion Chris Boardman had been leading the race.
Among the anticipated favourites to win the prologue in London next year will be Boardman's countrymen, Bradley Wiggins and David Millar.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone revealed the two stages would be used to commemorate the victims of the 7 July 2005 bombings.
Livingstone said: "Having the Grand Depart on the seventh of July will broadcast to the world that terrorism does not shake our city.
"There can be no better way of celebrating the unity of humanity than this great sporting event coming to us on that day and being seen by millions, safety and happily."
Alluding to London beating Paris to host the 2012 Olympic Games, organisers said the plans for 2007 would cement "the friendship between our two great cities".
Tour deputy director Jean-Marie Leblanc added: "We are proud that you have chosen such an important event as the Tour to encourage Londoners to become cyclists - not necessarily champions - but users of this marvellous instrument of transport and pleasure that is a symbol of freedom."
The event is expected to generate an estimated £70m in revenue.

Southport Cycling Club’s rider Kevin Reilley continued his impressive run of results when he won the Liverpool Century road race on the Pimbo circuit near Slelmersdale.
With a strong crosswind up the finishing straight it was always going to be a mass bunch sprint for the seventy riders of which Kevin left standing to win by several lengths.
This follows on from a number of recent placings including a win in the weekly race series at the Preston Arena.

In a separate race on the same Pimbo circuit another comeback rider also won when Dave Williams, who excels in such conditions, rode away from his adversaries to win by a clear margin.

Tom Diggle rode for the North West in the week long junior tour of Ireland and won the white jersey for best young rider.
Despite being up against competitors from all over Europe Tom also finished fifth overall and helped his team mates achieve high placings.

Southport's racing cyclists had one of their most successful week's racing for a long time when Steve Clark, Tom Diggle and Dave Williams all won road races.
It all started when Steve Clark rode at the Preston Arena where he got into a small break with team mate Martin Lyon. Martin put in an attack on the last lap which failed and this was the moment for Steve to take over and sprint in for his first victory in ten years.
Next it was Tom Diggle's turn to taste victory this time in the junior race on the very tough Oakenclough circuit. Tom escaped the clutches of the bunch with Adam Bonser and at one stage built up a near two minute lead. As the race came to the last two hundred meters Bonser led the sprint out on the flat finish which was perfect for Tom and he easily cruised past for a well deserved victory.
The Elite race on the same circuit was a near replication of the junior event when come back rider Dave Williams who now rides for his own Kuota/Biemme team broke away with James Williamson of the promoting club. Despite a fast approaching chasing group Williams held his nerve to sprint in for his first victory in five years.

A Fallen Idol, not.
I suppose we all suspected that there was more to Johan Museeuw’s preparation than endless kilometres across the flatlands of West Flanders but it was still a shock to discover that the Lion of Flanders was under investigation for epo use. He was in Hamilton, Ontario last October but instead of being an outside chance for a second rainbow jersey he was reduced to hanging around the hotel trying to avoid the attention of your correspondent. The Belgian Federation had asked him to step down for the good of the sport which sounded both hypocritical and ominous.
Come this spring it all seemed to be behind him and he stopped racing at a time of his own choosing after the Spring Classics but the problem hadn’t gone away. Johan is now a convicted doper and cheat and we are supposed to despise him
and his stolen victories.
But I can’t. To me Johan is still a hero and his epic wins are not diminished. Maybe if he didn’t emit such an aura of quiet dignity. Maybe if he wasn’t so close to his family and his Flemish roots.
Maybe if he had moved to Monaco or Switzerland to avoid the rapacious Belgian taxman. Maybe if he had moved to Tuscany to train in the sunshine. Maybe then I would think less of him, but he didn’t, he just carried on stacking in the miles. Whether battling into a gale off the North Sea or riding at sixty kms per hour behind his father’s moped he was the perfect role model for all of us who know
the pain and joy of bike racing.
I know it’s not the thing to be soft on doping or the causes of doping but in the absence of that mythical level playing field Johan’s still The Man.

The Eternal Fourth.
What a let down. I so much wanted a medal and I didn't care what colour. In the spring I bought a second hand but very nice track bike. I told Dave Cockram about it when we were in Mallorca and he said I should ride the Vets' National Champs and I would win "a hat full of medals". Was he taking the mick? I don't know but at the time I believed it was possible so I sent off my £46. I'm not kidding, it worked out at over one pound a minute.Poor value compared with P-B-P at one pound an hour!
I rode Sussex Track League until someone touched my back wheel and four came down. I didn't get to sleep until three O'clock the next morning worrying if it was my fault. Anyhow I gave it a miss after that and instead rode a few club 10 mile T.T's to "sharpen up" the old legs.
The week before the Champs I rode a hilly 200km Audax and averaged 13mph, not much leg speed there! Mid-week I rode another Ten and didn't feel too bad. On Saturday morning I drove to Herne Hill and despite forgetting my A-Z of London I got to the track without a hitch. I thought that was a good omen.
There were eleven entries in the 60-64 category so that put the odds of getting a medal at better than one in four, not bad. Then I looked at the bikes and all of a sudden my Terry Dolan looked like yesterday's technology. Worse still all around elderly gents were spinning away on rollers and turbo trainers. You couldn't get on the track as there was always a race going on so my warm-up was pumping up my tubs, letting them down and pumping them up again. I did that until I was sweating heavily.
I rode the 500m. Time trial and all I will say is that I didn't worry Geoff Cooke who took 37 seconds. Then the rain came and there was endless delay. Eventually it was the turn of the about thirty over sixties to ride the 10km Points Race. You will know that in the safety of a bar I have total command of all the subtle nuances of bunched racing. But put me on the track or road and I turn into a brain dead coward! Just the thought of touching shoulders and I break into a cold sweat so it is either the front or the back for me, usually the latter. After about ten laps of Yo-Yoing off the back I couldn't stand it any longer and cleared off the front! I gained about half a lap, had we been on Manchester I would have lapped the field! I was away for about seven laps but only got one sprint lap. When the bunch caught me I just managed to hang in there until the finish. Just five points put me in fourth place but my general consensus I had made the race. The winner was Clive Walmsley who I never rated on Kirkby thirty five years ago but he obviously knows how to ride a Points race.
Sunday's session started with the Pursuit so at least it was nice and safe. I felt this could be my chance to get onto the podium then I spoke to a rival who said he didn't normally bother with the Pursuit. As he said this he was fitting a pair of £200 aerofoil handle bars. Then he took a rear disc and deep carbon front wheel with about twelve spokes out of their padded bags. He needed the bags as the six ounce tubs looked as substantial as Durex! You will have already guessed that he got third and I was fourth just one second slower.
My last chance was the 10km Scratch race for my group and also the 55-59 age group. I thought this may help me as the young bloods would make a harder and less tactical race. Well it certainly seemed pretty hard but I swung on the back without too much difficulty but even when I could have moved up the group I just didn't have the bottle for it. Maybe all those crash scenes from Le Tour had got to me. I know everybody says it is safer near the front but it sure doesn't seem it to me. Anyhow I got to the bell lap still in last place and as they started sprinting I overtook quite a few. I was, once again, fourth in my age group although there was a number of the younger group in front of me.
So what lessons have I learnt? Firstly that there is little point riding bunch races on the track if you can't position yourself properly. Of course I already knew that but I have re-learnt the lesson. Secondly that in the pursuit unless you are are a superman you have to buy the special equipment and get a very low position, so it is overtime and Yoga lessons for me if I am to ride again. Thirdly unlike the old days at Kirkby track when you were racing almost non stop you must have rollers or a turbo. I watched Ivor Reed, who won the 750m time trial by a street, warming up and he got his rollers white hot. He sweat that much that he flooded the changing room. Fourthly you have to do specialist high intensity training. Geoff Cooke told me that he warms up for twenty minutes behind a Derny and then does twenty wind assisted flat out sprints. No idea why wind-assisted, maybe to do with high leg speed. Anyhow there is no chance of me doing that. I'd rather be the Eternal Fourth than take the fun out of cycling.
Regards, Ray Green, Championship contender (failed).
